Scripture

James 1:1-18

James 1:1-18 (NET)  From James, a slave of God and the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes dispersed abroad. Greetings!  (2)  My brothers and sisters, consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials,  (3)  because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance.  (4)  And let endurance have its perfect effect, so that you will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything.  (5)  But if anyone is deficient in wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without reprimand, and it will be given to him.  (6)  But he must ask in faith without doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed around by the wind.  (7)  For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord,  (8)  since he is a double-minded individual, unstable in all his ways.  (9)  Now the believer of humble means should take pride in his high position.  (10)  But the rich person’s pride should be in his humiliation, because he will pass away like a wildflower in the meadow.  (11)  For the sun rises with its heat and dries up the meadow; the petal of the flower falls off and its beauty is lost forever. So also the rich person in the midst of his pursuits will wither away.  (12)  Happy is the one who endures testing, because when he has proven to be genuine, he will receive the crown of life that God promised to those who love him.  (13)  Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one.  (14)  But each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires.  (15)  Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death.  (16)  Do not be led astray, my dear brothers and sisters.  (17)  All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change.  (18)  By his sovereign plan he gave us birth through the message of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Observation

How can we have joy in trials? How can we gain wisdom?

Application

In what ways do I need to adjust my attitude when facing trials? Have I ever asked God in faith to grant me wisdom? Do I need to now?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Heavenly Father, Remind me to consider it nothing but joy when I fall into all sorts of trials, because the testing of my faith produces endurance. May I let endurance have its perfect effect, so that I will be perfect and complete, not deficient in anything. I ask that you would grant me wisdom, believing that You will give it generously and without reprimand. Increase my faith and banish my doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed around by the wind. I do not want to be a doubter, for such a person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord, since he is a double-minded individual, unstable in all his ways. Help me to trust only in You and not in any earthly means of wealth. Strengthen me to endure testing, because when I have proven to be genuine, I will receive the crown of life that You promised to those who love You. Let me never say when I am tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for You cannot be tempted by evil, and You tempt no one. But I am tempted when I’m lured and enticed by my own desires. Then when desire conceives, it gives birth to sin, and when sin is full grown, it gives birth to death. Do not let me be led astray, Father. All generous giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from You, the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or the slightest hint of change. By Your sovereign plan You gave me birth through the message of truth, that I would be a kind of firstfruits of all You created. I pray these things in the name of the Lord Jesus, Amen!

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Amy & Debbie Brueggemann
  • Chris Carlton
  • Travis & Hali Davidson
  • Mike Daniels
  • Theresa Daniels
  • Brian & Eileen Davis

Missionaries:

  • Tim & Miranda Penn (Samid, Sarah), missionaries to Albania

CLF:

  • That Christian Life Fellowship would be a church that is devoted to the Word of God, and that we would be doers of it and not just hearers; that we would study the Word and so always be prepared to give everyone an answer–in season and out of season–and be approved workers who do not need to be ashamed, able to accurately understand and explain it.

Community: Rural towns in Treasure Valley – Emmett, Greenleaf, Homedale, Marsing, Middleton, New Plymouth, Parma, Payette, Wilder, Weiser, etc…

  • That city leaders would submit to God
  • That people can find and keep gainful employment
  • For sound financial management by city officials
  • Salvation for unbelievers
  • For the mayor, city council members, and public works officials
