Scripture

2 Peter 1:1-11 (NET)

(1) From Simeon Peter, a slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, have been granted a faith just as precious as ours. (2) May grace and peace be lavished on you as you grow in the rich knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord! (3) I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. (4) Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire. (5) For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge; (6) to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; (7) to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love. (8) For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately. (9) But concerning the one who lacks such things — he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins. (10) Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin. (11) For thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for you.

Observation

How can we possibly live godly lives on this earth? How do we keep from being ineffective and unproductive?

Application

Do I walk in the divine power to live a godly life that God has bestowed? Am I “making every effort” to live a life of excellence, to gain spiritual knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection, and unselfish love?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:

Dear Father in Heaven, May Your grace and peace be lavished on me as I grow in the rich knowledge of You and of Jesus our Lord! I can pray this because Your divine power has bestowed on me everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called me by his own glory and excellence. I thank you that through these things he has bestowed on me his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised I may become a partaker of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire. For this very reason, help me to make every effort to add to my faith excellence, to excellence, knowledge; to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love. For Your Word teaches that if these things are really mine and are continually increasing, they will keep me from becoming ineffective and unproductive in my pursuit of knowing the Lord Jesus Christ more intimately. May I never lack such things, for the one who does is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins. Therefore, empower me to make every effort to be sure of my calling and election, and so keep from stumbling into sin. Thank You that thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for me. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Pray to BLESS!

One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Scott & Kristi Guinn
  • Mike & Jamie Haberkorn (Hannah, Sean)
  • Patrick Hall
  • David & MaryBeth Hollander (Cole, Marcus)
  • Bob & Peggy Hoover

Ministry:

  • Chrysalis Women’s Transitional Housing

CLF:

  • Pray that we would be a church that is dedicated to the breaking of bread, both in the sense of being devoted to observing the Lord’s Supper, and in meeting together for meals to fellowship, to deepen bonds, to heal offenses, and to end disputes.

Community: Pray for single adults…

  • To embrace Christ as their best friend and lover of their souls
  • To more fully grasp the family heart of God
  • That God will bring them Godly friends to care for and support them
  • That God will give them a peace and drive away lonliness
  • That God will provide them with meaningful work & ministry in which to use their gifts

MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK:

And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever. – 1 John 2:17 (NET)
