Observation

What terrible mistake did the Israelites make (5-7)? How did God punish them? How and why did He deliver them? Then what happened?

Application

Do I give in to the lure of the world around me and “practice evil in full view of the LORD”? Do I repent and cry out to God? Do I keep repeating the pattern?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:

Dear Father in heaven, I admit that I fall sway to the enticement of this sinful world and my own desires, and I commit evil before You. I thank You that You hear when I call and You have delivered me many times. I ask that You would empower me to break the pattern of falling back in to sin time and time again, and that I would follow You faithfully. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Observation

What did the Angel of the LORD (a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ Himself) tell the Israelites, and why (1-3)? What was Joshua’s legacy (7)? What about the next generation (10-19)

Application

Am I more like the people during or following Joshua’s life? What kind of legacy will I leave for God?

Prayer

Dear Father, I ask that You would help me to be like the people during Joshua’s lifetime; worshiping You and praising You for Your great works. Keep me from becoming like the following generation, who forgot about You and Your mighty works, and doing what was evil in Your sight. Help me to live so that I have a legacy like Joshua! In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Observation

Why is woe pronounced on the city (1-2)? How is the remnant of true followers of God described (12-13)? What promises does God make to that remnant (15-20)?

Do I more closely fit the description in verses 1-2 or in verses 12-13? Am I living like I believe that the days described at the end of this chapter are actually coming for the people of God?

Prayer

Dear Father God, Keep me faithful to You! Please keep me from a rebellious, defiled heart that is disobedient and does not accept discipline. May I ever trust in You and draw near to You! Give me a heart that is meek and lowly and that trusts in the name of Yahweh. I thank You and praise You that Jesus has removed my punishment and permanently defeated my enemy, Satan. I am so thankful that the Holy Spirit dwells within me, and so I need no longer fear harm. For my God is with me, a warrior who saves! It is amazing to think that You rejoice over me with gladness and delight in me with shouts of joy! Thank You for the quietness that comes with Your love. Thank You that because I have received Him, I am no longer an object of Your wrath. May I never turn back from following You, but always seek You and inquire of You. I renounce my sin and all other gods and declare that You alone are my God and You alone are worthy of my worship and devotion. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
