Observation

What did Sarah do when she heard God’s promise? What did she do when God called her on it? What would it have taken for God to spare Sodom?

Application

Do I believe God or do I scoff at His promises? Do I try to deny my actions to the One who sees all things? Am I living righteously enough that God would spare my city if he found nine others like me?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father God, I must confess that I sometimes react like Sarah when the situation seems impossible. Please give me a heart that believes You no matter what the circumstances. May I be a beacon of the righteousness of Christ in this dark world. I pray that I would live in such a matter that would preserve my city! In Jesus’ name, Amen

Pray to BLESS!

Observation

What did God instruct Abraham to do (1)? Why did God promise Abraham short-term and long-term? How did God respond to Abraham’s suggestion of a compromise (17-20)?

Application

Do I devoutly live in God’s presence? Have I thanked Him lately for keeping His promise to give Abraham a son, who would be an ancestor of Christ?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father God, I desire to dwell in Your presence! Give me a heart that is devout and follows You daily. Thank You for keeping Your covenant with Abraham, even though human wisdom would say it was impossible. You are the God for whom the impossible is easy to accomplish! I thank You in Jesus’ name, Amen!

Ask that we would do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider one another better than ourselves, looking not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of each other. Pray that we would all have the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.

Dear Lord, Thank You that you are not only a God who makes promises, but You always keep them. I confess that, like Sarai, I am far too quick to stop waiting on Your timing and I try to force my own solutions onto situations, almost always to disastrous results. Give me faith to trust You and to wait for You to act in Your perfect timing. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Observation

What promise did God make to Abram in verse 1? How can this be said to be the foundation of every promise that follows? In ancient times, a covenant was sealed by dividing animals in two after which both parties would walk down the middle. What is the significance of God going between the pieces (in the form of the fire pot and torch) while Abram slept?

Application

Do I believe God fully and rest on His promise to keep me and never leave or forsake me? Do I believe God initiates and keeps His covenants without any need of help from me?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:

Dear Father in heaven, Thank You for Your grace! For You made Your covenant with Abram while he slept–You took the initiative and he could do nothing to help. You promised to keep Your word to him. Thank You that You do the same for me in Jesus! In His name I pray, Amen.
