Scripture

Acts 6

Observation

Why did the Twelve ask for deacons to be appointed? Why were members of the Freedmen’s Synagogue unable to defeat Stephen in a debate? What was their recourse?

Application

Do I ever allow myself to become over-committed? What can I learn from this passage about delegating so that the good doesn’t get in the way of the best? How can I become more like Stephen? What can I expect from self-righteous “religious” people as that happens?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Lord Jesus, I ask that there will be no favoritism among us and that no one with a need among us will go overlooked. I pray that we would not sit back and expect a select few to do all the work of the ministry, but that each of us would step up and serve in ways that You lead us, whether that is teaching the Word, or serving meals, or whatever else You might choose. I ask that You would show each of us when we should serve in a specific area and when we should delegate it to someone else so that we can serve in the way You have called us. I ask that as a result of this unified, cooperative effort the Word of God will spread and the number of disciples in our community will increase rapidly, and a large number of priests and followers of other religions will became obedient to the Christian faith. I ask that we will study Your Word to show ourselves as approved workmen, and that Your Spirit would fill us, so that when detractors of the faith oppose us they can not stand up against our wisdom or the Spirit by whom we speak. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Doug & Pam Patchin
  • Jared & Amanda Patchin (Alex, Luke)
  • Andrea Rodriguez (Willie, Yulieta)

Ministry:

  • Boise Rescue Mission

CLF:

  • That we will be people who are devoted to giving to the Lord’s work and to anyone who has a need.

Our Community:

  • Pray for the relationship between generations–parents, children, grandparents

MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK:
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. – 2 Corinthians 5:21
