Romans 14

Observation

What is the Christian’s responsibility to a weaker brother? How should we treat issues that are not essential tenets of the faith?

Application

Do I consider my freedom more important than my fellow Christian’s conscience? Do I ever try to force my opinions and restrictions on others, even if they are not specifically spelled out in Scripture? If I am a “stronger brother,” do I need to exercise more restraint in public? If I am a ‘weaker brother,” do I need to grow up and be more gracious, understanding that just because something not specifically condemned in Scripture pricks my conscience doesn’t necessarily mean it is a sin for others?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father in Heaven, Thank You for Your GRACE! As this passage teaches, may Your people stop passing judgment on one another over disputable issues. Help those who are stronger to accept those who are weak without looking down on them. Help those who are weak not to stumble or pass judgment on the freedom of those who are stronger. All true believers are Your servants, and none of us are in a position to judge Your servants on debatable issues—we each stand or fall before You, our master. And we will stand, for You are able to make us stand. So help us not to let rites, rituals or religious observations divide us. May we follow the adage: “In essentials unity, in non-essentials liberty, in all things charity.” In the precious Name of Jesus, Amen!

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Ken & Twilla Eden (Joshua, Jonathan)
  • Gil & Lois Estes
  • Gary Friend
  • For the salvation of lost friends, relatives, neighbors, etc.

Missionaries:

  • J & G Simon, missionaries to Austria

CLF:

  • Ask that we would be a church that is devoted to true fellowship: Pray that we would be encouraged from being united with Christ, comforted by His love, bonded with His Spirit, tender and compassionate with one another. Pray that we would be like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Ask that we would do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider one another better than ourselves, looking not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of each other. Pray that we would all have the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.

Community: Pray for Media Industries (TV/Movies, Radio/Music, Print/Internet)

  • Godly themes/influences
  • Christian workers at all levels sensitive to God’s leading
  • Salvation for influential media leaders
  • Courage to share God’s message
  • Financial rewards for wholesome media

MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK:
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. – John 15:4
