What four things did the Israelites do that resulted in judgment from God? What is meant by the statement “everything is permissible, but not everything is helpful/builds up”?

Am I guilty of any of things that caused God to judge Israel? How does verse 13 encourage me and how can it help me not to yield to temptation? Do I indulge myself in “permissible” things, even when they are not beneficial to the God’s work and His people?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father, Help me not to forget what happened to my spiritual ancestors in the wilderness. You guided them by the cloud and parted the sea so they could pass and You supernaturally provided them with food and water. Yet, they set their hearts on evil things. They were idolaters, sexually immoral, they tested You, and they were ungrateful and grumbled, and You judged them for these things. Help me not to think that I am above all that, but keep me ever mindful that I must guard myself against such sin. The temptations I face are common to mankind–others have resisted them, and so can I. Thank You for Your promise that I will never be tempted beyond what I can bear, and You are faithful to always provide a way out so I can stand up under it. Therefore, strengthen me to flee from idolatry, remembering that there is but one God and one church. Help me to remember that though all things are permissible, not all things are helpful or constructive. May I not seek my own good, but the good of others. In everything I do, may I do it all for Your glory, and so follow the example of Christ. I ask all this in the precious Name of Jesus, Amen!

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Amy & Debbie Brueggemann
  • Chris Carlton
  • Travis & Hali Davidson
  • Mike Daniels
  • Theresa Daniels
  • Brian & Eileen Davis

  • Tim & Miranda Penn (Samid, Sarah), missionaries to Albania

  • That Christian Life Fellowship would be a church that is devoted to the Word of God, and that we would be doers of it and not just hearers; that we would study the Word and so always be prepared to give everyone an answer–in season and out of season–and be approved workers who do not need to be ashamed, able to accurately understand and explain it.

Community: Pray for the elderly…

  • That they will be treated respectfully
  • That they will not dwell on mistakes and regret
  • That God will provide for their health and finances
  • That God will protect them from those who would try to harm them
  • Salvation for unbelievers
  • Any broken family relationships restored before they pass on

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. – 2 Peter 3:18
