Scripture

1 Corinthians 13

Observation

In the context of the preceding chapter, what is Paul’s point in verses 1-3? Why is “the greatest of these” love?

Application

Do I see the qualities in verses 4-7 in my life? Would others be able to honestly substitute my name for the word “love” in these verses? How does my church measure up to verses 8-10? How about me personally?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Father, In this passage we see how important love is to You. Without it, all of the gifts mentioned in the previous chapter, all of the religious acts I could muster, all of the discipline and dedication in the world mean nothing. Lord, I want to be so filled with Your love that people who know me could insert my name into verses 4-7 in place of the word “love”. My desire is to be patient and kind, not envious and boastful and proud. Give me a heart that is not rude, self-seeking, or easily angered and that does not keep a record of wrongs. Make me a person who does not delight in evil, but rejoices in the truth. Make me a disciple who always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. I thank You that You are love, and Your love never fails, no matter what else does. I thank You that though now I see but a poor reflection of You, one day I shall behold You face to face; that though now I know in part, on that day I shall know fully, even as I am known. In the meantime, help me to grow more in love with You every day, and to delight in You. Help me to constantly remain in faith, hope, and love, but may the greatest attribute in my life be the same as the greatest attribute in the life of my Savior: LOVE! In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Pat & Hannah Kelley
  • Fred & Shirley Leonard
  • Mark & Michelle Morgan (Cody, Kyle)
  • Michael Morgan

Ministries:

  • Provenance
  • Genesis World Mission

CLF:

  • That we will devote ourselves to prayer, individually, in small groups, and as a church.

Community: Pray for our state leaders…

  • Governor & his advisers
  • Judges
  • state senators and representatives
  • that they would all be faithful in carrying out their duties justly
  • that they would submit themselves to God

MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK:
But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen. – 2 Peter 3:18
