2 Corinthians 8

Paul points out in this chapter that at least in one way, comparing ourselves with others is a good thing–in what way? What does he mean when he says “finish the work”?

Would others consider me a generous person? Do I excel in the grace of giving? If not, in what specific ways can I begin to move toward that goal?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Lord God, Thank You for Your grace in giving generously to Your people. May I always be like You in that regard. Even in severe trials may my extreme joy in You well up in rich generosity beyond my ability, that I may have the privilege of sharing in service to the saints. May I give myself first to You and then to Your servants, in keeping with Your will. I ask that Your Spirit would grow me to excel in faith, speech, knowledge, earnestness, and in love for Your people, and also in the grace of giving. May I prove the sincerity of my love by comparing it with the earnestness of others. For I know the grace of my Lord Jesus Christ: that though He was rich, yet for my sake He became poor, that through His poverty I might become rich. May I start well, and then finish the work, eagerly completing it. May I do so with a willing heart, so the gift is acceptable according to what I have, for You do not judge me based on what I do not have. May I give so as to honor You and show my eagerness to help. I ask these things in Jesus’ Name, Amen!

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Ken & Twilla Eden (Joshua, Jonathan)
  • Gil & Lois Estes
  • Gary Friend
  • For the salvation of lost friends, relatives, neighbors, etc.

  • J & G Simon, missionaries to Austria

  • Ask that we would be a church that is devoted to true fellowship: Pray that we would be encouraged from being united with Christ, comforted by His love, bonded with His Spirit, tender and compassionate with one another. Pray that we would be like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Ask that we would do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider one another better than ourselves, looking not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of each other. Pray that we would all have the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.

Community: Pray for business professionals providing goods and services

  • God to be glorified by excellent work
  • Ministry to occur in the workplace
  • Godly employers and employees
  • Salvation for unbelievers
  • Sound financial strategies
  • Strong, God-honoring relationships

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. – Philippians 4:6
