Scripture

1 John 4:7-21 (NET)

(7) Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been fathered by God and knows God. (8) The person who does not love does not know God, because God is love. (9) By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God has sent his one and only Son into the world so that we may live through him. (10) In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. (11) Dear friends, if God so loved us, then we also ought to love one another. (12) No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God resides in us, and his love is perfected in us. (13) By this we know that we reside in God and he in us: in that he has given us of his Spirit. (14) And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. (15) If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God. (16) And we have come to know and to believe the love that God has in us. God is love, and the one who resides in love resides in God, and God resides in him. (17) By this love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus is, so also are we in this world. (18) There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears punishment has not been perfected in love. (19) We love because he loved us first. (20) If anyone says “I love God” and yet hates his fellow Christian, he is a liar, because the one who does not love his fellow Christian whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. (21) And the commandment we have from him is this: that the one who loves God should love his fellow Christian too.

Observation

How do we know what love is? How do we show that we love God?

Application

How often do I thank God for His love? How do I show that I love God and my brothers and sisters in Christ?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:

Dear Father God, Help me to love Your people, because love is from You, and everyone who loves has been fathered by You and knows You. The person who does not love does not know You, because You are love. By this Your love is revealed in us: that You sent Your one and only Son into the world so that we may live through Him. In this is love: not that I have loved You, but that You loved me and sent Your Son to be the atoning sacrifice for my sins. Because You so loved me, I also ought to love my fellow Christians. Though no one has seen You at any time, if I love Your children, You reside in me, and Your love is perfected in me. This is how I can know that I reside in You and You in me: You have given Your Holy Spirit. And I testify that I believe You sent Your Son to be the Savior of the world. You said if anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God resides in him and he in God. So I have come to know and to believe the love that You have in me. You are love, and the one who resides in love resides in You, and You reside in him. By this love is perfected with me, so that I may have confidence in the day of judgment, because just as Jesus is, so also am I in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears punishment has not been perfected in love. We love because You loved us first. Help me to show that same love to Your people, because if anyone says “I love God” and yet hates his fellow Christian, he is a liar, because the one who does not love his fellow Christian whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. So give me the grace to obey the commandment I have from You: that the one who loves God should love his fellow Christian too. I ask this in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the honor both now and on that eternal day. Amen!

  • L – Labor (their job or school)

CLF:

  • Ask that we would be a church that is devoted to true fellowship: Pray that we would be encouraged from being united with Christ, comforted by His love, bonded with His Spirit, tender and compassionate with one another. Pray that we would be like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Ask that we would do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider one another better than ourselves, looking not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of each other. Pray that we would all have the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.
