Scripture

1 John 5:1-12 (NET)

(1) Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been fathered by God, and everyone who loves the father loves the child fathered by him.  (2)  By this we know that we love the children of God: whenever we love God and obey his commandments.  (3)  For this is the love of God: that we keep his commandments. And his commandments do not weigh us down,  (4)  because everyone who has been fathered by God conquers the world.  This is the conquering power that has conquered the world: our faith.  (5)  Now who is the person who has conquered the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?  (6)  Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood — not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.  (7)  For there are three that testify,  (8)  the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three are in agreement.  (9)  If we accept the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, because this is the testimony of God that he has testified concerning his Son.  (10)  (The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has testified concerning his Son.)  (11)  And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.  (12)  The one who has the Son has this eternal life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this eternal life.

Observation

How does one “conquer the world”? What is the only “litmus test” for eternal life?

Application

Do I walk in the light, following God’s commands and loving His people? Do I truly believe that Jesus is the Son of God and the only source of eternal life?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:

Dear Father in Heaven, I believe that Jesus is the Christ and therefore that I have been fathered by You. Let my life show that I love You, Father, and that I love Your children. By this I will know that I love the children of God: whenever I love You and obey Your commandments. For Your commandments do not weigh me down, because everyone who has been fathered by You conquers the world. This is the conquering power that has conquered the world: my faith. Now who is the person who has conquered the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? I believe Jesus Christ is the one who came by water and blood — not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. For there are three that testify, the Spirit and the water and the blood, and these three are in agreement. If we accept the testimony of men, Your testimony is greater, because this is the testimony You have testified concerning Your Son. (The one who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself; the one who does not believe You calls You a liar, because he has not believed in Your testimony concerning Your Son.) And this is the testimony: You have given me eternal life, and this life is in Your Son. The one who has the Son has this eternal life; the one who does not have the Son of God does not have this eternal life. Thank You for giving me eternal life! In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Pray to BLESS!

One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Scott & Kristi Guinn
  • Mike & Jamie Haberkorn (Hannah, Sean)
  • Patrick Hall
  • David & MaryBeth Hollander (Cole, Marcus)
  • Bob & Peggy Hoover

Ministry:

  • Chrysalis Women’s Transitional Housing

CLF:

  • Pray that we would be a church that is dedicated to the breaking of bread, both in the sense of being devoted to observing the Lord’s Supper, and in meeting together for meals to fellowship, to deepen bonds, to heal offenses, and to end disputes.

Community: Pray for Ontario…

  • That city leaders would submit to God
  • That people can find and keep gainful employment
  • For sound financial management by city officials
  • Salvation for unbelievers
  • For the mayor, city council members, and public works officials
