Scripture

1 Peter 4:12-19 (NET)

(12)  Dear friends, do not be astonished that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as though something strange were happening to you. (13) But rejoice in the degree that you have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice and be glad. (14) If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you. (15) But let none of you suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker. (16) But if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but glorify God that you bear such a name. (17) For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. And if it starts with us, what will be the fate of those who are disobedient to the gospel of God? (18) And if the righteous are barely saved, what will become of the ungodly and sinners? (19) So then let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator as they do good.

Observation

How should we respond to suffering for the Name of Jesus?

Application

How do I respond to being insulted for being a believer in Jesus: with complaining, or with trust, prayer, and rejoicing?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:

Heavenly Father, May I not be astonished if a trial by fire comes upon me, as though something strange were happening to me. But may I rejoice in the degree that I have shared in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed I may also rejoice and be glad. If I am insulted for the name of Christ, remind me that I am blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on me. But let me not suffer as a murderer or thief or criminal or as a troublemaker. But if I suffer as a Christian, I will not be ashamed, but glorify You that I bear such a name. For it is time for judgment to begin, starting with the house of God. So then if I should suffer according to Your will, oh God, I entrust my soul to You, my faithful Creator. Empower me to do good, even in the midst of persecution to death. I pray these things in the name of the Lord Jesus, Amen!

Pray to BLESS!

One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Amy & Debbie Brueggemann
  • Chris Carlton
  • Travis & Hali Davidson
  • Mike Daniels
  • Theresa Daniels
  • Brian & Eileen Davis

Missionaries:

  • Tim & Miranda Penn (Samid, Sarah), missionaries to Albania

CLF:

  • That Christian Life Fellowship would be a church that is devoted to the Word of God, and that we would be doers of it and not just hearers; that we would study the Word and so always be prepared to give everyone an answer–in season and out of season–and be approved workers who do not need to be ashamed, able to accurately understand and explain it.

Community: Pray for orphans and children in foster care…

  • that they would come to know the adoptive Father-heart of God
  • that they would be positively influenced by Christian workers
  • that God would bring Christian friends alongside them
  • that they would come to salvation
  • that they would be adopted by godly parents

MEMORY VERSE OF THE WEEK:

And the world is passing away with all its desires, but the person who does the will of God remains forever. – 1 John 2:17 (NET)
