Matthew 6

What does Jesus teach about prayer, giving, and fasting? About material wealth?

Is my worship like that described as honoring to God in this passage, or more like that of the Pharisees? Am I overly concerned with money and materialism?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father in Heaven, Help me to practice my religion in a manner that honors You, and not from a motive of me being honored by people. May my giving be from a sincere and cheerful heart, and be kept between just You and me. When I fast or pray, may it be from a desire to commune with You, and not to impress others. I pray that Your Name may be honored, that Your kingdom would come and that Your will would be done on earth as it is in heaven. I ask that You would provide my daily needs, and help me to forgive others as You have forgiven me. I ask that You would keep me from temptation and deliver me from the evil one. Remind me to focus on treasure in heaven and not on earth, so that my heart will be in the right place. Help me not to worry about my life, but to trust You to take care of me. I ask all of this in the name of the One who gave Himself for me, Jesus Christ. Amen!

Pray to BLESS!

One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Scott & Kristi Guinn
  • Mike & Jamie Haberkorn (Hannah, Sean)
  • Patrick Hall
  • David & MaryBeth Hollander (Cole, Marcus)
  • Bob & Peggy Hoover

  • Chrysalis Women’s Transitional Housing

  • Pray that we would be a church that is dedicated to the breaking of bread, both in the sense of being devoted to observing the Lord’s Supper, and in meeting together for meals to fellowship, to deepen bonds, to heal offenses, and to end disputes.

Community: Pray for the relationship between generations–parents, children, grandparents

  • That the true Christian faith of older generation would be clearly communicated and passed down to children
  • That saved children in unsaved families would clearly exhibit and communicate the faith to their parents and grandparents
  • A harvest of souls of all ages
  • Good, nurturing relationships

So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith. – Galatians 6:10 (NET)
