What are the biblical qualifications for an elder? For a deacon?

Whether or not I am an elder or a deacon, these qualities should be showing and growing in every follower of Christ. Are they in me?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father God, Help me to live a life that is above reproach. Strengthen me to be faithful, sensible, self-controlled, respectable, and hospitable. If You have called me to teach, I ask that Your Spirit would empower me to be an able teacher. May I never become drunk or violent, but rather remain in control and gentle. Keep me from being a contentious, quarrelsome person and help me to be free from the love of money. Help me to manage my own affairs well and be dignified. I ask that my lifestyle would be such that that even those outside the faith would think well of me. Keep me from becoming arrogant so that I will not fall into disgrace or the devil’s trap. Help me to continually hold on to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. I pray this in the mighty and precious name of Jesus, my coming King! Amen.

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Ken & Twilla Eden (Joshua, Jonathan, Sophia)
  • Gil & Lois Estes
  • Gary Friend
  • Scott & Kristi Guinn

  • J & G Simon, missionaries to Austria

  • Ask that we would be a church that is devoted to true fellowship: Pray that we would be encouraged from being united with Christ, comforted by His love, bonded with His Spirit, tender and compassionate with one another. Pray that we would be like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Ask that we would do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider one another better than ourselves, looking not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of each other. Pray that we would all have the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.

Community: Pray for County leaders…

  • Assessor, Coroner, Treasurer, Clerks, Judges, Prosecutors, Defenders, Sheriffs
  • that they would make sound financial decisions
  • that they would all be faithful in carrying out their duties justly
  • that they would submit themselves to God

No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money. – Luke 16:13 (NET)
