Acts 8

Why was Simon’s offer to pay the apostles such a grievous sin? What did the Ethiopian man need?

What does this passage teach me regarding seeking spiritual gifts more than the One who gives them? How can I prepare myself to be able to teach others from the Scriptures when the opportunity affords itself?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:

My God and Father, I thank You, Lord, that though the early church was harshly persecuted, they remained in You and You brought them through it. I thank You that You have always preserved a remnant unto Yourself down through the ages. I thank You that to this point in my life I have not had to face such persecution, but if You ever decide to allow me to go through such trials, my prayer is that You would strengthen me and fill me with Your Spirit that I, too, would remain faithful even unto death. May I even now begin preparing my heart and mind and submitting my will to You to be ready should such an event occur.

I ask that Your people would repent and rally to You, and that You would do mighty things through us in our communities so there will be great joy in our cities. I ask that You would grant Your people discernment to distinguish false teachers from true, and that anyone who would try to buy or sell the gift of God with money would repent, turn from their wickedness, and cry out to You for mercy.

I pray that You would guide those Your Spirit is drawing to Christ to Your people or guide us to them, as You led Philip to the Ethiopian man in this passage. I pray that we would study Your Word and become fully equipped to answer questions and lead them to You from every book of the Bible. May Your Spirit draw the hearts of many toward You, and may Your people be willing and obedient tools to lead them to Jesus. In His Name I pray, Amen.

Pray to BLESS!

One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Fred & Shirley Leonard
  • Tris & Chris Miller
  • Mark & Michelle Morgan (Cody, Kyle)
  • Michael & Jenn Morgan

  • Genesis World Mission

  • That we will devote ourselves to prayer, individually, in small groups, and as a church.

Community: Pray for outreaches & service projects

  • Creative strategies
  • Volunteers
  • Anointing of the Holy Spirit
  • Believers working together in unity
  • Provision of necessary resources
  • Salvation for people reached

Now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love. – 1 Corinthians 13:13 (HCSB)
