Psalms 96-97

What specific way does Psalm 96 instruct us to praise and worship (1-2)? For what things should we sing and rejoice? What reasons to praise God are found in Psalm 97? How should God’s people live (10,12)?

Do I praise God for being a refuge for His people throughout history, and for His divine power? Do I ask Him for His blessing, protection and favor, and that His work will be seen by His people? Do I praise God for His sovereign power, majesty, and protection? Do I hate evil and love God? Is my heart glad in the Lord?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Father God, I sing to You, LORD, and praise Your name; I proclaim Your salvation today. I declare Your glory in my nation among the people. For You are great and highly praised; You are feared above all gods. All other gods are false, but You made the heavens. Splendor and majesty are before You; strength and beauty are in Your sanctuary. I ascribe to You glory and strength. I ascribe to You, LORD, the glory of Your name; I bring an offering of praise before Your court and I worship You in the splendor of Your holiness. All the earth trembles before You. May all the nations say: “The LORD reigns. The world is firmly established; it cannot be shaken. He judges the peoples fairly.” Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice; let the sea and all that fills it resound. Let the fields and everything in them exult. Then all the trees of the forest will shout for joy before You, for Christ is coming–for He is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness and the peoples with His faithfulness.

Father in Heaven, You reign! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coasts and islands be glad. Clouds and thick darkness surround You; righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne. Fire goes before You and burns up Your foes on every side. Your lightning lights up the world; the earth sees and trembles. The mountains melt like wax at Your presence, Lord of all the earth. The heavens proclaim Your righteousness; all the peoples see Your glory. All who serve and boast in false gods or atheism or secularism will be put to shame. All beings must worship You. Zion hears and is glad, and the towns of Judah rejoice because of Your judgments, LORD. For You, LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; You are exalted above all the gods. Increase my love for You and my hatred of evil! You protect the lives of Your godly ones; You rescue them from the hand of the wicked. Light dawns for the righteous, gladness for the upright in heart. I am glad in You, LORD, and I praise Your holy name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Fred & Shirley Leonard
  • Dan & Jenn Loeschke
  • Corey & Sheryl Morasch
  • Cody Morgan
  • Kyle Morgan
  • Mark & Michelle Morgan

  • Christian Pro-Life Ministries in Idaho (Idaho Chooses Life, Stanton Health Care, etc)

  • That we will devote ourselves to prayer, individually, in small groups, and as a church.

Community: Pray for the elderly…

  • That they will be treated respectfully
  • That they will not dwell on mistakes and regret
  • That God will provide for their health and finances
  • That God will protect them from those who would try to harm them
  • Salvation for unbelievers
  • Any broken family relationships restored before they pass on

Question #18: Will God allow our disobedience and idolatry to go unpunished?

Children’s Answer: No, God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them both in this life, and in the life to come.

Adult’s Answer: No, every sin is against the sovereignty, holiness, and goodness of God, and against His righteous law, and God is righteously angry with our sins and will punish them in His just judgment both in this life, and in the life to come.

Memory Verse

Ephesians 5:5-6 (HCSB)

For know and recognize this: Every sexually immoral or impure or greedy person, who is an idolater, does not have an inheritance in the kingdom of the Messiah and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty arguments, for God’s wrath is coming on the disobedient because of these things.
