Ecclesiastes 7

SB: Prudence recommended as a means of avoiding much of the vanity and vexation of the world. The best way to save ourselves from the vexation which the vanity of the world creates, is to make use of wisdom, maintaining strict government of the passions. Wisdom is a defense.

LASB: This seems to contradict Solomon’s previous advice to eat, drink, and find satisfaction in one’s work—to enjoy what God has given. We are to enjoy what we have while we can but realize that adversity also strikes. Adversity reminds us that life is short, teaches us to live wisely, and refines our character. Christianity and Judaism see value in suffering and sorrow. The Greeks and Romans despised it; Eastern religions seek to live above it; but Christians and Jews see it as a refining fire. Most would agree that we learn more about God from difficult times than from happy times. Do you try to avoid sorrow and suffering at all cost? See your struggles as great opportunities to learn from God.

Dear Lord God, Once again, I ask that You would give me godly wisdom to deal with trials, tragedies, and suffering. When adversity comes, even as I pray for deliverance, may I also seek how to grow and honor You until You choose to deliver in whatever way You choose. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Pray to BLESS!

One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries.

  • Dustin and Amy Barton
  • Debbie Brueggemann
  • Michelle Caldwell
  • Kathi Carr
  • Loran “Bud” Clark

  • Compassion International

  • That we will be devoted to evangelism and growth; that the Lord will add to our numbers those who are being saved.

Community: Pray for outreaches & service projects

  • Creative strategies
  • Volunteers
  • Anointing of the Holy Spirit
  • Believers working together in unity
  • Provision of necessary resources
  • Salvation for people reached

Operation Christmas Child:

  • Pray that God will use Operation Christmas Child to bring joy to boys and girls who are facing poverty, sickness, or war.

Question #48: What is the church?

Children’s Answer: The church is the family of God and the body of Christ, of which He is the head.

Adult’s Answer: The church is the family of God and the body of Christ, of which He is the head. The universal church is all those who have received salvation and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ. The local church is a community of members of the universal church, who worship together, encourage and learn from one another, build each other up in the knowledge and grace of God, and spur each other on to good works. God sends out this community to proclaim the gospel and prefigure Christ’s kingdom by the quality of their life together and their love for one another.

Memory Verse

1 Corinthians 12:13-14,27 (HCSB)

For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body–whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free–and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. So the body is not one part but many. Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it.
