Leviticus 5

Click here to read today’s passage on Bible Gateway

The sin offering described in the last chapter and the “trespass” offering here in chapter 5 are similar, but different. The former deals with sin as part of our human nature, while the latter regards individual acts of sin (both of commission and omission). In addition to the offering, offenders had to make restitution for their sinful acts (here against God and in chapter 6 against our fellow man). These sins are seen by God as a debt that must be paid, and true repentance involves involves restitution where possible.

Am I thankful that Christ’s once-for-all offering of himself pays the debt of both my sinful human nature and each individual sin I commit? Do I just go through the motions of private confession to God, or do I truly repent and make restitution to others when I have wronged them?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father in Heaven, The explanations of these sacrifices make it quite clear that sin is a serious issue in Your eyes, and that it is a debt that requires payment; the wages of sin is death. Thank You for the gift of Jesus Christ, who paid a debt He didn’t owe because I owed a debt I couldn’t pay! Help me not to merely go through the motions of confessing my sin. Rather, may I be truly repentant and make restitution whenever possible. Thank You for the forgiveness and eternal life that is mine in Christ Jesus! In His name I pray, Amen.
