Scripture

Deuteronomy 17

Observation

What was the penalty for worship of anyone/anything but Yahweh in Israel? How were those accused of this assured justice (4-7)? What was too be done with particularly difficult cases (8-11)? What requirements were made of future kings (14-20)?

Application

Do I worship anything but God? Do I make snap judgments based on my opinions, assumptions, and biases, or do I carefully investigate and wait for the testimony of two or three witnesses? Do I take difficult issues and disputes to wise and godly mediators and abide by their decisions? Do I support leaders who do not attempt to acquire wealth and power for themselves and do not exalt themselves over their countrymen, and who regularly read and follow God’s word?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Dear Father in Heaven, Keep me from exalting or worshiping anything but You. Keep me from rushing to judgment before careful consideration and investigation, and keep me from declaring anyone guilty without the testimony of two or three witnesses. When there is a conflict or dispute too difficult for me to handle, help me find godly people to mediate, and then remind me and empower me to abide by their decisions. Wherever you have giving me the responsibility to help appoint leaders, give me wisdom to choose and support those who do not attempt to garner wealth or power or prestige, but rather those who follow the principles from Your word–and wherever You have placed me in a position of leadership, help me to be this kind of person. I ask this in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:

  • Roger & Andrea Gabel; Tom
  • Steve & Gloria Gangwer
  • George Gifford
  • Scott & Kristi Guinn (Josiah)
  • Mike & Jamie Haberkorn (Hannah, Sean)

Ministry:

  • J & G Simon, missionaries to Greece

CLF:

  • Ask that we would be a church that is devoted to true fellowship: Pray that we would be encouraged from being united with Christ, comforted by His love, bonded with His Spirit, tender and compassionate with one another. Pray that we would be like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. Ask that we would do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider one another better than ourselves, looking not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of each other. Pray that we would all have the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus.

Community: Pray for our national leaders

  • God’s anointing on them and a desire in them to follow Him
  • For Jesus to once again be Lord and King over our nation
  • For the president and cabinet to seek after God
  • For judges to rule justly and righteously
  • For senators & representatives to pass godly legislation and block sinful bills
  • That our government would protect its citizens and punish evildoers

Operation Christmas Child:

  • Pray that the boxes will open doors for children to hear the Good News in parts of the world that are typically closed to proclaiming the Gospel.
