John 8

Click here to read today’s passage on Bible Gateway

How did Jesus respond to the self-righteous accusations of the Pharisees? How did Jesus respond to the woman and her sin? What was His goal in this interaction? How can we know that we really are Jesus’ disciples? Why is the fact that Jesus is God’s Son so important to our spiritual freedom? What is the significance of Jesus’ statement: “Before Abraham was, I am”?

What can I learn from Jesus’ interaction with this woman that can help me in sharing the gospel with others? What do I learn about my own self-righteous accusations and condemnation of others? Is my level of consistency in studying God’s Word where Jesus wants it to be–am I being the kind of disciple He wants? In what specific ways do I show in my daily life that I am “really free”?

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Lord, I, too, often sin and fall short of Your glory. I thank You that Your Spirit convicts me but He does not condemn me, though other people may. Father, so often I want grace and mercy for myself, but like the Pharisees I want justice and judgment for others. Change my heart in that regard, I pray, and help me to realize that I have no business casting stones. But also help me to remember that, although I am forgiven and not condemned, Your will for me is not to wallow in my sin, but to reject it. I see in this passage the importance You place on judging matters from a heavenly perspective rather than from an earthly one. Help me to look at things through Your eyes, so I can understand that all of Your judgments are right. Thank You that because I believe in Jesus, I will not die in my sins. I believe that Jesus is who He claims to be, and that He did and spoke just what You taught Him. Help me, God, to always do what pleases You, just as Jesus did, and remind me that You will never leave me alone.

Lord Jesus, I declare that I am Your disciple, and as such, I want to continue in Your Word. Please impress upon me the importance of consistently spending time in Your Word, and grant me the discipline and dedication to be a workman who rightly understands the word of truth. I thank You that Your written Word is the revelation of You–the Living Word–and You are truth. Because I know You, I know the truth and have been set free. Because You are God’s Son and have set me free, I am really free. Help me to be a good servant of my Heavenly Father and honor Him with my life. Help me to seek His glory and not my own. I thank You that because I have accepted Your Word–confessed with my mouth that Jesus is Lord and believed in my heart that God has raised Him from the dead–I will never see death–ever! May I daily grow to know You more, Jesus, and have unity of purpose with You for You are the I AM, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob–and you’re my God, too! Amen
