Scripture

John 13

Observation

Why didn’t the disciples wash their own feet? Why did Jesus do it? What did He mean when He said, “Unless I wash you, you have no part of me”? How did Jesus treat Judas and Peter, even though He knew Judas would betray Him and Peter deny Him?

Application

Do I ever wait for someone else to do menial tasks that need to be done, rather than taking the initiative to do them myself? How should Jesus’ example in this passage affect my attitude in that regard? What one thing will I do today (at home, at work, for my neighbors, for my church) to follow Jesus’ example of serving? How should I treat those who hurt me, whether intentionally or unintentionally?

Prayer

Pray today’s Scripture back to God:
Lord Jesus, Too often I think and behave as if others should serve me instead of looking for ways to serve them. Thank You for setting the example that the greatest is the one who serves the most. Thank You for showing me the full extent of Your love by washing away my sins so that I could be a part of Your family. Just as You, my Lord and Teacher, washed the feet of Your disciples, make me willing to serve others and follow Your example. I am not greater than You, My Master, and I know these things–now I will do them and follow Your path of blessing. I thank You that even though You knew Judas would betray You, You treated Him with kindness. And even though You knew Peter would deny You, You loved him. Help us to love each other, just as You have loved us, in spite of our shortcomings, and so display to all men that we are Your disciples, to Your glory and the glory of the Father. Amen.

Pray to BLESS!
One good way to pray for people is to use the acronym BLESS to pray for God’s blessing on every area of their lives:

  • B – BODY (physical health)
  • L – Labor (their job or school)
  • E – Emotions (emotional health as well as guarding against letting emotions rule)
  • S – Social (relationships with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, church, etc)
  • S – Spiritual (remaining true to God and growing in Him)

Spend some time praying for the following people and ministries:
